Matter takes on different forms depending on how the atoms are arranged.

What is a matter in science.

At the most fundamental level matter is composed of elementary particles known as quarks and leptons the class of elementary particles that includes electrons. A bowling ball for example has more mass than a beach ball. Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space it has volume. A mass of matter is any portion of matter appreciable by the senses.

All matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms. Anything that takes up space is called matter. A molecule is the smallest particle of matter into which a body can be divided without losing its identity. At a minimum matter requires at least one subatomic particle although most matter consists of atoms.

Matter is everything around you atoms and compounds are all made of very small parts of matter. Air water rocks and even people are examples of matter. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Matter material substance that constitutes the observable universe and together with energy forms the basis of all objective phenomena.

Different types of matter can be described by their mass. We call these forms states of matter. The mass of an object is the amount of material that makes up the object. The word matter is sometimes used to refer to a pure substance.

Those atoms go on to build the things you see and touch every day. Three divisions of matter are recognized in science. On earth the most common states are solids liquids and gases.
