Decomposition is the process by which fungi and microorganisms break down dead plants and animals and recycle essential materials and nutrients.

What animals live in the forest floor layer.

The last layer of the rainforest is the floor. The forest floor is generally dark and damp and is home to many plants insects amphibians spiders small mammals and lizards. Large leafed shrubs and saplings new trees grow in the patches of sunlight. It is mostly covered with small plants and decomposing vegetation and is the domain of land dwelling forest floor animals.

They scour the ground for everything fallen on the forest floor that includes fallen fruits fungi and carrion. Some other species that thrive on the tropical rainforest floor include elephants mongoose tapirs southern cassowaries okapis armadillos rainforest pigs and gorillas. The forest floor is often blanketed with decaying leaves twigs fallen trees animal scat moss and other detritus the forest floor is where recycling occurs fungi insects bacteria and earthworms are among the many organisms that break down waste materials and ready them for reuse and recycling throughout the forest system. Armadillos and the giant anteater are other carnivores that dwell on the forest floor.

Tigers jaguars leopards and mountain lions are some of the cats found living on the forest floor. Red eyed tree frogs howler monkeys and many other rainforest monkeys coatis sloths toucans and iguanas. Cats are some of the most common species on the forest floor. Unfortunately the jaguar and the tiger are currently endangered animals.

Dead leaves fallen from the plants in the layers above cover the ground. Animals in the forest floor are the tigers jaguars elephants and tapirs. Animals that live in the canopy layer of south american rainforests include. That area only gets a very small percentage of the sunlight filtering through the upper layers.

Large leafed shrubs and saplings new trees grow in the patches of sunlight. Dead leaves fallen from the plants in the layers above cover the ground. Rainforest pigs include wild boars and warthogs. In a way they help to spread the tree density in the rainforest by dropping the seeds via their feces dung.

Only two percent of sunlight gets through the thick canopy trees and understory plants to reach the forest floor. The understory layer could be described as the middle part of the flora system. Fungi break down this decaying plant matter and many insects live among the dead leaves. Animals that live in the rainforest canopy layer in other parts of the world include orangutans aye ayes and sugar gliders.

The forest floor is the bottom layer of the rainforest and its also the darkest layer of the rainforest. Rodents and insect eating animals find plenty to eat on the forest floor. This is a forest habitat for birds lizards snakes and large predatory cats.
